Meet Jim: enslaved, resourceful, and determined to reclaim his story. In James, Percival Everett reimagines Twain’s classic through Jim’s eyes — witty, rebellious, and far more than Huck’s sidekick. As he plots his escape down the Mississippi, Jim outsmarts hunters, navigates betrayal, and wrestles with freedom’s cost. With razor-sharp humour and searing insight, Everett transforms a caricature into a full, unforgettable man. The result is both an exhilarating adventure and a powerful reckoning with America’s past. Winner of the 2025 Pulitzer Prize, James is a bold, electrifying tale of survival, dignity, and the power of claiming your own voice.

October Author of the Month
Percival Everett
Percival Everett is one of the most fearless and original writers today. Born in 1956 in Georgia and raised in South Carolina, he’s published over twenty books spanning novels, short stories, and poetry. His work digs into race, identity, history, and truth — always with wit, daring experimentation, and real heart.
His acclaimed novel Erasure (2001) — a satire on race and publishing — became the film American Fiction (2023), which won the 2024 Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Other standout works include I Am Not Sidney Poitier (2009), mixing absurd humour with sharp critique, and So Much Blue (2017), a moving story of secrecy, art, and memory.
In 2024, Everett published James, a reimagining of Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn told through Jim’s eyes. Witty, moving, and fierce, it swept awards: the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the Kirkus Prize, and the Carnegie Medal, and was shortlisted for both the Booker and the PEN/Faulkner.
Everett is also a painter and teaches as Distinguished Professor of English at the University of Southern California. With honours including the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award and the Windham–Campbell Prize, he stands as one of the most exciting voices of our time.
